Compiled 2005 by Jonathan de Ferranti with assistance from John Biggar and Aaron Maizlish.

This is one of eight lists that cover the known ultra-prominences for South America.  This project represents original research into accurate elevations and prominence of the world's major summits, employing both new data sources and published topographic materials.

FOOTNOTES

A further suggested resource is John Biggar's climbing guide "The Andes" and website.

[1]  Cristobol Colon:  This is the HP of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Northern Colombia, and the fifth most prominent summit on earth.  Some sources suggest that the nearby 'twin" summit of Pico Bolivar may be higher.

[2]  Ritacuba Blanco:  Our given elevation is based in part on a 2006 GPS survey of the summit by John Biggar, which is consistent with SRTM.  John has provided us an elevation estimate of 5410m ±15m.  This is midway between two wildly divergent frequently quoted elevations.  5493m (18,021')  is often quoted.  Some Colombia topographic maps provide a spot elevation of 5330m (17,487').  The most recent topographic map has a high contour of 5350m which is probably consistent with the 2006 GPS reading.

[13]  These two peaks are believed to be on the border between Colombia and Panama, and thus appear on both lists.
