EUROPE:  ATLANTIC ISLAND

ULTRA-PROMINENCES

9 Peaks with Prominence of 1,500 meters or greater

List compiled 2004 by Jonathan de Ferranti, Eberhard Jurgalski, Aaron Maizlish

The following list is meant to complement the main lists of the European prominences, which are linked respectively from the lists and maps page.

For organizational purposes, we included the summits of Europe on one primary list and two ancilliary lists:

Core Europe:  98 Ultra-Prominences that are on the mainland of Europe, the Scandinavian Peninsula, and the Mediterranean Islands (including one summit on Cyprus.)

European Russia and the Caucasian States:
12 Ultra-Prominences in the Urals, Novaya Zemlya, and the Caucasus (both the "European" and the "Asian" sides of the ridges.

Europe:  Atlantic Islands:  Islands in the Atlantic Ocean that belong to European nations, and are commonly associated with Europe.

The purpose is to give the reader, or hiker a Core list that represents the European Peninsula, but to also provide information of other summits in areas that are historically or politically affiliated with Europe.  The reader is reminded that this does not equate to the summits in the European Union, or to any other modern political definition of Europe.   The E.U. ultra summit list would include the top four on the Core Europe list, followed by Pico de Teide (below) at number five, and Piton des Neiges, in Reunion (found on the Africa list) at number six.

The following nine peaks might be a fun list to complete.   They are all the highpoints of various islands, six sub-tropical, and three sub-Arctic or Arctic:

Four summits in the Canary Islands, which are a part of Spain.
One summit in the Azores, which are part of Portugal.
One summit in Madeira which is part of Portugal.

The highpoint of Iceland.
The highpoint of Spitsbergen, part of the Norwegian possession of Svalbard.
The highpoint of Jan Mayen, an Arctic island belonging to Norway.
